Breast cancer has become one of the most common and serious cancers affecting women, making it a major health concern today. However, the positive aspect is that breast cancer can be treated successfully if detected early with proper medical care. When identified at an early stage, early detection of breast cancer can improve treatment results and significantly increase the survival rate. As per my experience, I have seen that many women lack proper awareness about how to detect breast cancer, which makes education and regular awareness extremely important.

I, Dr Sandeep Batra, will discuss the symptoms that you can consider for identifying breast cancer early. Remember, without a proper diagnosis, you cannot confirm breast cancer, but efficient awareness can help you take early measures. In this blog, you will learn about the common symptoms that most women face, which can help to detect breast cancer efficiently.
Why is it important and how to detect breast cancer early?
In the early stages, there may be no pain or symptoms of the disease in women with breast-cancer. In fact, most women are in good health at the time of their diagnosis. The ability to find cancer before it metastasises leads to more gentle treatment and better recovery outcomes. As per my experience, early detection can increase the chances of survival and enhance the quality of life. Regular awareness and screenings should be practised by every woman, especially after the age of 40 or when she has breast cancers cases within her family.
What are the common Early Signs and Symptoms of Breast Cancer

- If you have breast-cancer, then you can experience a new lump in the underarm or breast.
- Many of my patients have experienced changes in the breast shape and size, which can be an early symptom of breast cancer.
- Apart from that, puckering and dimpling of the skin can also indicate breast-cancer.
- Alongside this irritation and redness around the nipple, along with bloody discharge, is a potential sign of breast cancer.
- I have experienced that many of my patients have suffered from nipple and breast pain, which are being overlooked most of the time.
How can you perform a breast self-examination ?
- Firstly, you will need to perform a breast self-examination once a month 5 to 7 days after the end of your menstrual period.
- In terms of post-menopausal women, it is recommended to choose a certain day in every month for this examination.
- If you want to perform breast self-examination, you will have to look in the mirror and stand with your arms at your side. It will help you to understand the changes in your shape and size of your breasts.
- Apart from that, I recommend my patients to use the pads of their fingers and to move them in circular motions by covering the breast so that the changes can be highlighted effectively. Most of the time, we overlook the changes in our armpit which needs to be examined properly.
What are the medical screening methods for detect breast cancer?
- Firstly, mammography is an X-ray of the breast that can detect breast-cancer if it is a Bing performed every 1 to 2 years.
- Apart from that, ultrasound and MRI can be utilised for the early detection of breast cancer. In that case, I recommend consulting with an expert doctor before performing any clinical examination.
